After so many years of using the site to promote my songwriting, I have decided that the site is best used to share a bit about my life, the things I enjoy and the people I love. Our BIG news is that Baby Gabrielle is now 2 1/2 years old and we are having the time of our lives.  Our dog, born just a couple of months before Gabrielle, and adopted only a few weeks following the passing of my father, has matured and is an amazing part of our family. Anyway, please enjoy your visit and drop me a note to say hello.

Mark in Thailand
I appeared on scene in the 60s and grew up with my brother David and a sister now estranged. I have lived in NJ, Syracuse, Philly, NY, San Fran, Boston and LA. I’ve spent extended periods of time in Israel, Puerto Rico, BVIs, Europe and Africa. I have made brilliant friends, played football in Europe for the U.S. National Team, lived aboard my boat, bungy jumped from the 2nd highest bungy point on earth, photographed the Orion Nebula, spent time with African tribes, seen the Aurora, hiked N. Thailand, photographed bears in Alaska, sailed in a trans-ocean race, performed on stage wearing only a toga in Jamaica, hiked Machu Picchu, sweated in the Amazon, climbed a glacier, explored the Galapagos, built a guitar, slept in an bomb shelter during a bombing in Israel, photographed models, recorded a couple of CDs, wrote books, married a beautiful woman, and had a perfect child. I still have other things to do.

Now I live in LA where I practice law, write, travel, take photos, shoot astrophotography, produce music/video and dabble in quantum physics (well… not yet anyway). I have a few books in the works and look forward to a lot more to come.

I am almost twenty years into my career as an attorney.  I wanted to share a little bit of my background without posting a complete resume.

Currently, I work for Cetera Financial Group, a financial holding company which was spun-off from ING North America in 2010.  I am part of a small team and responsible with my colleagues for legal issues related to their broker-dealer/investment advisors, as well as for matters related to privacy, data security and intellectual property.

For fun, I have enjoyed representing artists in a pro bono capacity – and have done this since the very beginning of my career.  As a volunteer, I’ve enjoyed working with VIP Mentors, Lawyers for the Arts and the Children’s Defense Fund.

All very exciting and very fun.  Click here for information on my professional background.

I Come First by Mark Nicholas
I write because I feel like I have something to say – hopefully to add to the discourse.  My first book, the Essentials of Living Aboard a Boat has been a best seller for almost 7 years (in its genre) and my second book, I Come First, is now – finally – off and running.

I enjoy speaking, and establish agendas on a variety of business-related subjects, including things like human behavior in business, business negotiating/politics, legal issues, and so forth. In the financial services industry, I speak on legal issues related to privacy, advertising/marketing and social media issues.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to share some pics/videos of the family – but like everything else on this site, mostly I am sharing with myself and family.  This website addresses two fears: the first is that this stuff should be archived such that crisis can’t take this away, and second, that we build a living history that Gabrielle can have some connection with – if she wants to.  This is our history and it will vanish unless saved and stored.

Standing Right Here CD Cover by Mark Nicholas
I don’t know what I can say about my music.  I get to play guitar and record music.  Maybe I wasn’t born with all of the same chops as other folks, but I’ve enjoyed every bit of my time as a musician and I feel very lucky to get to play my tunes.

And just as importantly, I have had the opportunity to spend an extensive amount of time in recording studios and among some of the most talented people around.  I’ve helped build $20mm state-of-the-art facilities, been a roadie, guitar tech, studio engineer, producer and gopher.  And I have so many album credits that I have been a member of the Grammy’s for many years now.

Photographing Polar Bears
One of my most enjoyable escapes is my photography.  I am proud to share some of my favorite shots here on the site and I would invite you to take a few minutes to click around on the Photography tab.

I love to shoot more specialty photography – not just landscapes and scenic shots, but wildlife, high speed, macro and astro photography.  I shoot with a Canon 1D Mark IV and 5D Mark II (although my astro cameras are a QSI-583 and a Canon 20Da). My primary lenses are all Canon. My travel kit includes tele-extenders, flashes and various accessories. My astro kit uses a Losmandy GM-11 mount, SBIG STV guider and scopes. I use Adobe Photoshop CS5 and ImagesPlus 4.0, as well as Adobe Lightroom 3 for editing, and the two plugins I use the most are Nik Multimedia 3.0 and PhotoFrame5.

Another of my favorite hobbies is to cut video. I have taken on private clients for years and enjoy working on projects that have an emotional connection – so I’ve done lots of birthday presents and gifts for other occasions. I’ve also worked with business folks, comedians and families to help capture and share their most precious memories. These days, I edit family videos and podcasts almost exclusively, but every so often still branch out.

I have used lots of editing platforms in the past, but these days find great comfort in my Sony Vegas studio, with Vegas 10 Pro, Boris FX BCC and some other fairly simple stuff.
