Photography Overview

Astrophotography
I stumbled across astrophotography during an aurora shoot in Alaska. I kept seeing a smudge on my photos – shot with an ultra wide angle lens, and it turned out that it was the Andromeda Galaxy. Next thing I knew, I was on the road toward seeking to capture the nighttime objects to make them into my own. Here is an example of what I’ve shot thus far.

Concert Photography
My love of music and enjoyment of working with artists makes concert photography a nice fit. With Gabrielle, I rarely get out this time of night anymore, but I sure do love to shoot the shows.

High Speed Photography
What I mean by “high speed photography” is photography that is, essentially, shot using a flash (the lightning fast burst of light) as my shutter, and since that burst can be as fast as 1/40,000 of a second, we are truly talking about freezing time. For me, this means water drops, splashes, pops and effects.

Macro Photography
Another technical style of photography that I enjoy is true macro photography. I use both a Canon macro lens (100mm 2.8) and a super macro (Canon 65mm 1-5x manual). This is a very precise style and I do look forward to continuing explore the world of macro (and improving at it) for years to come.

Model Photography
It has been a few years since I started shooting models, and I have been blessed with a mag cover (and another pending). I find model photography even more challenging than portrait photography when it comes to focus and technique since posing is more complex, and lighting techniques are (in my style) often harsher – providing little room for error. I’ve been pleased with the results thus far (but I sure do have much to learn!).

Portraiture Photography
My favorite portraiture shots do tend to be somewhat candid, although there are tremendous pose photogs out there. Here are a few samples of the kinds of shots that I have done – and I hope to keep doing since I really do enjoy the personal interaction and connection when shooting people.

Scenic Photography
Perhaps my most challenging style of photography (regretfully) is scenic. I can sit in awe of nature for hours on end, but my road toward being able to capture landscapes has been slow. I do think that there is a difference between enjoying nature and breaking it down into a proper composition. I am finding great enjoyment on my path toward competency.

Sports Photography
Sports photography just keeps on developing for me – from the need for perfect timing and razor sharp focus, sports photography is really quite the challenge to master. The perfect shot is fleeting and the slightest blink might cause the action to be missed. I will say that unlike any other type of photography, I do find myself becoming a part of the action and, before I know it, the entire event is over. This is a perfect mental vacation!

Time Lapse Photography
I will define time lapse photography in two ways – the first is a single photo that shows the passing of time or movement (like star trails), and the second, a collection of single shots that combine to form a movie that reflects the passing of time. I hope to do both and here is a gallery that depicts time and motion.

Travel Photography
In the same way that I enjoy people photography, I do enjoy shooting travel/location – but I do try to be very respectful with the people whom I shoot. It is easy for me to feel guilty as I reduce local residents to slideshow (zoo) status, and so to remedy that I do work to build relationships with the subjects of my pics. It is less efficient, but far more meaningful to me.

Wildlife Photography
And then… there was wildlife – perhaps my great photographic love. It is not as much the photos that I love (although I enjoy them). but it is the moment in time and unity with nature that I find so appealing. This is my escape. Sitting, waiting and hoping that nature will choose to cooperate with me, and I am a victim to her whim. And so I have learned to sit and relax and not become frustrated, and every so often some little miracle happens. And hopefully I have the camera ready at that moment.
